When is the best time to install mulch in Illinois?
Many Illinois properties mulch in spring, once the soil has warmed and after early weeding, and again in fall before winter to help protect plant roots. The right timing for a specific property depends on plant types, bed condition and how much of the previous mulch layer remains.
Spring mulching is often paired with a bed cleanup, since it is easier to see soil and weeds before mulch is applied.
A fall application can help insulate plant roots heading into winter and gives beds a clean appearance for the season.
Some properties only need one application per year if the previous layer has not fully broken down — a quick bed assessment is the best way to decide.
